What a phone photo can give away

This test photo carries the kind of details a phone saves by default. The viewer reads them like this.

What photo metadata can reveal

Most cameras and phones save extra details, called EXIF data, inside every photo.

  • Location

GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, often accurate to a few metres. This is the one to watch before sharing.

  • Date and time

When the photo was taken, and sometimes when it was last edited.

  • Camera and settings

The phone or camera model, lens, shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

  • Software

The app that saved or edited it, like Photoshop, Lightroom or an AI image generator.

Check image metadata for AI

Some AI images carry clues in their metadata. The viewer looks for three of them.

  • AI labels

An IPTC field that says the picture was made or edited with AI. Google, Adobe and others add it.

  • Saved prompts

Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI often save the full prompt and settings inside PNG files.

  • Content Credentials

A signed record (C2PA) of how the picture was made, added by tools like DALL·E and Firefly.

Questions people ask

How do I check a photo's metadata?

Drop the photo into the viewer above, or tap Check photo metadata and pick it from your phone. You'll see the camera, date, settings, software and location saved in the file, plus every other field in the full list. The photo is read on your device and never uploaded.

Can photo metadata show where a picture was taken?

Yes. Phones usually save GPS coordinates in photos when location is turned on for the camera. If a photo has them, the viewer shows the exact spot and a map link. Use the remove button to download a copy without them.

Can metadata tell if an image is AI-generated?

Sometimes. Some AI tools label their images, add Content Credentials, or save the prompt in the file, and the viewer flags these. But most AI images carry no such label, and labels are easy to strip, so no clue doesn't mean the photo is real. Use our AI image detector too.

Why does my photo have no metadata?

WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most messaging apps remove metadata when you send or post a photo. Screenshots and edited exports often have little or none as well.

How do I check photo metadata on iPhone?

In the Photos app, open a photo and swipe up or tap the info button to see the date, camera and location. For every field, open this page in Safari, tap Check photo metadata, and choose the photo.
